The 8th parliament of the Republic of Ghana provided fresh hopes for Ghana, especially the neck-to-neck membership before the opening of the parliament. The drama and sense of commitment to defend the democracy of Ghana in the events of electing a speaker of parliament was glorifying, as many Ghana begins to develop deep interest and high hopes in the conducts and performance of MPs in the 8th parliament.
Although a considerable number of Ghanaians remain skeptical despite the early good show of the minority MPs. It’s right to agree with the views of prophets of doom who never have confidence in the MPs considering their past conduct. Conceded to approve some corrupt ministerial nominees, including clueless nominees, easy approval of budgets, considerations of recommendation of paying first and second ladies, and approval of car loans confirms their posturing.
The NDC MPs have provided very little in checking this reckless government from excessive browning, corrupt practices, and abuse of power. The opposition MPs are rather sleeping on the jobs and their leadership credibility ought to be scrutinized. Imagine having a future president and vice presidents among these people what difference will they make?
The party must begin to demonstrate strong leadership and commitment that will be more reassuring than what Ghana is seeing. The party must be told, 2024 election is not guaranteed for the party (NDC) to wrestle power from the NPP government. Ghanaians now grasp the NDC MPs to be part of the Nana Akufo Addo-led government mess. They have created a conducive atmosphere and are not ensuring check and balance to the current administration.
The 8th parliament will go down in history as the worse parliament Ghana ever had despite the neck-to-neck membership of the house. The development is a worrying trend and all hopes are dash.
