Just In: Ronaldinho Has Been Released From Police Custody In Paraguay

After the release of the former Brazil striker Ronaldinho Gaucho and his brother from police custody, Ronaldinho’s lawyer said his client will remain in Paraguay to help police with their enquiries into why he entered the country in possession of fake Paraguayan passport.

His lawyer Mr.Adolfo Martin stated that:

He and his brother have no restrictions on them concerning their freedom.”

“But Ronaldinho has taken the decision to remain in Paraguay and await the proceedings.”

Meanwhile, Paraguayan prosecutor Federico Delfino in a conference earlier stated that Ronaldinho and his brother were detained on Wednesday in possession of what were believed to be fake Paraguayan passports.

According to Delfino, the duo left Guarulhos airport in Sao Paulo with Brazilian passports and were given Paraguayan ones as soon as they got off the plane in the Paraguayan capital.

They have not gone through the process of obtaining Paraguayan nationality.”

“To get Paraguayan nationality or to be naturalised as a Paraguayan you have to have resided in the country.” Mr Delfino added.

According to Ronaldinho’s lawyer, Brazilians do not need a passport to travel between Brazil and Paraguay, both of which are members of the Mercosul bloc.

Mr. Martin was unable to clarify why they showed Paraguayan passport when they had voyage as of late on their Brazilian travel papers to China, Europe and the United States.

Mr Marin said they were surprised by Paraguayan authorities, and asked for more time to see the formal accusations.
